In the summer of 2018, we decided to start building a small natural wildlife pond as a fun science experiment for the kids. It has no chemicals or filters, no moving water either. About 60%-70% of the surface has plants anchored with gravel in shallow (6"-12") and deep terraces (3.5'). They are the ones oxygenating and filtrating the water. Frogs and little minnows take care of mosquito larvae. It took about 3 years to be fully established.
